![]() The new friendby Rita Foelker Puppets: Whale, Dolphin, Polar Bear, Seal One, Seal Two, 5 Penguins. Additional Materials: Little heart-shaped cushion, box where the cushion fits (very squeezed), small pieces of colored paper. Narrator: When Whale woke up that morning, she didn't see Dolphin at his daily sunbath. That was weird, because Dolphin has always loved routine. What could be happening? Whale swam through secret passageways to next tanks, looking for her friend. It was getting colder and c-c-c-colder!... Dolphin: (Outside the scene that shows Whale listening to his voice.) You shouldn't be crying… Complaining about loneliness - what a nonsense! Don't you see that I'm freezing here just to be with you? Polar Bear: (Outside the scene, so we can't know who's speaking.) You're right, but… sadness is stronger than me!! Whale: (To the audience) Wait a minute!! What does it mean? Who's talking to Dolphin? I will find out... (Whale disappears into the water. Dolphin and Polar Bear come in.) Dolphin: Sadness?... What's sadness, my friend? Polar Bear: I don't know how to explain it, I just know how I'm feeling. Dolphin: Right!! That's exactly what I want to know. You don't need to use beautiful words just the truth about your feelings. What are you feeling, after all? Polar Bear: I feel my heart pretty small, compressed in a little box. (This part of the play will be showed using a heart-shaped cushion in a pretty small box.) (Whale appears in the left side like she was listening to the conversation.) Narrator: Whale seems to be jealous of Dolphin and his new friend Polar Bear. Dolphin: Do you remember how or when it started? Polar Bear: Well... Let me see… One of these days, there was girl with her parents at the other side of the glass (you know, from where people watch us). They were cuddling her with so much tenderness that I remembered my parents from the Artic. That was when my heart began to squeeze. Dolphin: And why do you think it happened? Polar Bear: Because there is nothing I can do, my friend. I can't go back to my family. I can't write to them. (Crying.) I can't change the reality. I miss them. (Buaaa!) Dolphin: You know, I have a friend, Whale, and she is very smart. If you let me I'll tell her your story. I'm sure she'll come up with some idea to help you. Polar Bear: Really? And why would she do that? Dolphin: Because she is one of the coolest creatures I've ever met! Whale: (Look to the audience and tries to leave quickly and whispering.) Better nobody see me here… Dolphin: (Yelling.) Whale! What a coincidence! I was hoping to talk to you. Whale: (Disguising.) What? To me? Dolphin: There's someone I want you to meet. Come with me. Whale: (Swimming after Dolphin.) Wow! It's getting colder! Dolphin: I want you to meet Polar Bear, a bear from the Artic… You know, the North Pole! Whale: How are you doing, Polar Bear? Polar Bear: Feeling sad. Dolphin said maybe you could help me. Narrator: Dolphin and Polar Bear tell Whale about what's happening. Whale: What's family to you, Polar? Polar Bear: Well... To me family is where we feel spontaneous, next to people we trust and love, and who love us... Whale: OK. And when you lived in North Pole, your family was all of bears, your relatives. I understand you miss them. But what if we turn into a new family to you, where you could find friendship, love and trust. You could call us every time you need help or feel sad! Polar Bear: Love the idea, Whale! (At this moment, the heart pulls out from the box with a lot of pieces of tossed colored paper) Would you be my new family? Dolphin: Sure! Why not? And not just us. Let me to introduce: (Dolphin calls to the stage…) Seal One and Seal Two! (Seal One and Seal Two come in and wave to the audience.) Whale: The Penguins, our official band! (Five penguins come in and wave to the audience.) All the characters dance on the stage and say goodbye. Dolphin: Today I thought about what's sadness, about the meaning of family and I learned I can help someone who is sad by offering my friendship and understanding. (Talking to children.) And you? Did this story make you thought about something? What did you learn? |
